A groundswell of nutrition conscious vets are beginning to recommend to their clients that they supplement their animals diet with a daily dose of flaxseed oil, poured over the food. The vets are finding remarkable results in clearing up skin conditions, relieving arthritic and inflammatory pain, as well as improved over all pet health. Fish oils are also known to help with brain function, and therefore help animals with behavioural problems and conditions such as epilepsy.
Alaskan sled dog mushers are fortifying their dogs’ diets with flax oil as it serves as a source of energy, keeps less desirable saturated fats mobile in the blood stream, increases oxygen uptake to the cell, decreases recovery time from strenuous exercise, and prevents and heals worn and chaffed paws. Numerous studies conducted on animals and humans show that flax has powerful anti-tumour properties and may reduce tumour size by 50%.

Research shows that Omega 3-rich fish oil can help prevent heart disease, maintain optimum blood pressure and cholesterol levels and give almost immediate relief from joint pain, migraines, depression, autoimmune diseases and many other conditions. And, by improving brain development and memory functioning, from conception through old age, Omega-3 oils also provide the perfect brain food.
A study published in Surgical Neurology on the use of fish oil to treat chronic low-back and neck pain had promising results. Many of the patients had degenerative disc conditions.
After beginning supplementation, subjects were given a questionnaire asking for clinical improvements and any side effects. After an average of 75 days of fish oil supplementation, 60% of respondents reported significant improvements, including reduction in overall pain and 59% were able to stop taking other pain medicine. None of the patients experienced significant side effects and 88% of the respondents planned to continue using the fish oil omega-3s.
Researchers at Aberdeen and Edinburgh universities found that people who eat oily fish or take fish oil supplements score 13% higher on IQ tests and are less likely to show early signs of Alzheimers. Lawrence Whaley, the head of the research team, said that it does so by decreasing inflammation.
Work at the Institute of Food Research in the UK has shown that oil-rich fish could be protective against cancer, as studies using fish oils high in omega 3 fatty acids can induce pre-cancerous and cancer cells to die.
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD): seniors who eat fish at least twice weekly are almost half as likely to have AMD than those who eat fish less than once a week, according to Johanna Seddon, M.D., and colleagues in Archives of Ophthalmology.
A study presented at the American College of Rheumatology found significant improvements in symptoms of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, a major autoimmune disease.
“This is the first study in lupus patients measuring improvements in blood vessel function,” said Stephen Wright, MD, “After 6 months we saw evidence confirming the beneficial effects of omega-3 fish oils for improving symptoms of lupus and, also, evidence of a cardio-protective effect in these patients,”
Research shows that pregnant women who take omega-3 supplements during their pregnancy, as well as during their child’s infancy and nursing, have children with far fewer allergy problems:
One of the researchers in the study commented that fish oil worked by relieving inflammation in the mother, and this had an effect on the child’s immune system also.
Several well-conducted randomized controlled trials report that in people with a history of heart attack, regular consumption of oily fish or fish oil/omega-3 supplements reduces the risk of non-fatal heart attack, fatal heart attack, sudden death, and all-cause mortality (death due to any cause). Most patients in these studies were also using conventional heart drugs, suggesting that the benefits of fish oils may add to the effects of other therapies.
Several population (epidemiologic) studies report that dietary omega-3 fatty acids or fish oil may reduce the risk of developing breast, colon, or prostate cancer.
Fish oils may also aid weight loss.
In the past, if I decided not to add fish oils or flax oils to my dogs’ evening meals, I definitely noticed a difference. Their coats were less glossy, and their energy levels and mobility changed subtly.
