Summer Tips
Many of us love the sun and dislike the cold and the rain or snow and ice. Some dogs are very similar, but a lot of the time this may be because we are like that and have set our dogs behaviour pattern to match.
There are some breeds that feel the cold or heat more than others. However, at heart, most dogs don’t see the weather as we do, and are far more likely to want to go outside and walk, whatever the weather.
Too much heat, being left in the scorching sun, is dangerous and can cause dehydration and lead to death. Don’t leave a dog in the car on hot days – it’s equivalent to cooking him in an oven.
Keeping a dog outside in freezing weather can have the opposite effect and cause hypothermia. Most dogs are absolutely fine with wind and rain, and even cold conditions for a short period of time. It is us humans that take a dislike to that!

Think about what your dog is ok with - smaller dogs tend to feel the cold more, and large dogs feel the heat more. It is obviously wrong to subject a dog to extremes of any condition, but many are perfectly happy in 'normal' conditions.
Great memories can be had of being caught in torrential rain on a walk when you all get drenched. The dogs can think it is great fun splashing around in puddles and really enjoy the dry-off with towels when they get home. They love the snow as well - playing with snowballs is a highlight of the winter.
