Pet Vaccine Myths
If you're unsure about whether or not to boost your pets every year, read
Myth No. 1.
Vaccines protect our dogs against disease, helping to ensure they live long, healthy, happy lives.
Wrong: Vaccines only sometimes protect our dogs against disease (if at all). Scientific studies into human vaccines have shown that just as many vaccinated people, and sometimes more vaccinated people, contract diseases as do unvaccinated people. In just one example, in an obituary in the Daily Telegraph dated 24 July 1997, the immunologist Professor George Dick was praised for the long war he waged against vaccination of children against smallpox which, according to The Telegraph,: "he blamed for killing more victims than the disease. By the 1950s smallpox was so rare in Britain that mass vaccination, even with its small risk of mortality, was killing more children than would have died without it. But it was not until 1971 that the vaccination programme was dropped. Since then the disease has become extinct."
A study conducted by Canine Health Concern during 1997, involving 4,000 dogs, showed that 68.2% of dogs in the survey with parvovirus contracted it within three months of being vaccinated. Similarly, 55.6% of dogs with distemper contracted it within three months of vaccination; 63.6% with hepatitis got it within three months of vaccination; 50% with parainfluenza contracted it within three months of vaccination; and every single dog with leptospirosis contracted it within that three month timeframe.
So vaccines represent - at best - only a 50/50 chance of protection. But if you doubt the validity of the CHC survey, ask around. It won't take long to find people whose dogs contracted these diseases shortly after being vaccinated, or humans who contracted diseases right after the jab.
Myth No. 2.
Vaccines have eradicated epidemics.
Wrong, although vaccine manufacturers like to claim this. For example, parents are currently being pressurised into having their children vaccinated against meningitis. The first vaccine for this was introduced in 1985 but soon began to lose credibility after doctors reported that cases of meningitis were showing up in children straight after they were vaccinated. One Minnesota study showed that the shot increased the risk fivefold of contracting the disease. Many new vaccines later, and many reports since, have linked the meningitis (Hib) jab with the incidence of meningitis. One study published in JAMA in 1993 conceded that non-vaccinated infants didn't get the disease at any higher rates than vaccinated children. More recently, according to a Public Health Laboratory Service press statement issued during October 1999, the new vaccine doesn't work either.
And what of the measles jab? In America, child vaccination is mandatory. That is, parents are forced by law to have their children vaccinated. Despite this, epidemics of measles still occur at three- to four-year intervals.
And the pertussis vaccine? Well, during a nationwide epidemic of whooping cough (pertussis) in Cincinnati, Ohio, researchers found that the epidemic mainly occurred in children who had completed the full DPT vaccine. We could go on, and on, and on . . . citing cases of vaccine failure. CHC's own study of over 4,000 dogs is no different. Vaccines did not protect the dogs in our survey, which makes the next myth the biggest lie in the history of 'healthcare'.
Myth No. 3.
Vaccines are extremely safe.
Wrong: Tell this to the people around the world who are serving life sentences for allegedly murdering their children . . . children who died shortly after being vaccinated. No-one can legitimately claim that vaccines are safe because no-one has conducted the necessary research to make that claim. There are no studies to show the long-term effects of vaccines on humans, let alone dogs.
In fact Merck, a vaccine manufacturer, states in black and white in the world-renowned Merck Manual (the doctors' bible) that vaccines can KILL patients who suffer from, or come from families with allergies, heart conditions and neurological (brain) problems. They state unequivocally that these patients should not receive live virus vaccines. Neither should your animals. Despite this, doctors and vets continue to vaccinate contra-indicated individuals . . . and remain ignorant of the consequences. They claim that vaccine reactions are rare, but this is only possible to believe if you refrain from looking.
Myth No. 4.
Only a tiny minority of genetically susceptible dogs will suffer adverse reactions to vaccines.
Wrong: Whilst some dogs will have genetic weaknesses that make vaccines more dangerous to them, as shown above (and it seems that many dogs these days have allergies, heart conditions and/or neurological problems), there are many other factors which can put your dog at risk. Intervet, the UK's biggest selling veterinary vaccine manufacturer warns, in its data sheets, that "immunocompetence may be compromised by a variety of factors if . . ."
1. the dog is genetically defective
2. there is something wrong with the dog's diet
3. the dog is unhealthy when vaccinated
4. the dog is stressed at time of injection
5. the dog's immune system is incompetent
6. the dog is exposed to a virus before or immediately after vaccination
7. the dog is taking immune suppressant drugs such as steroids
8. the vet administers the vaccine inappropriately
9. the dog is incubating disease at the time of vaccination
"Immunocompetence may be compromised" means that the immune system may not be functioning properly, in which case the animal will be unable to mount a defence against the vaccine challenge. The consequence of this could be that the animal contracts the disease from the vaccine, and could die (reference Dr Ronald D Schultz, head of pathobiology at Wisconsin University). There is NO adequate adverse reaction reporting scheme in the UK or anywhere else for that matter - not for animals, and not for humans. It is impossible to say with any degree of truth that only a 'tiny minority' have adverse reactions.
In the UK, vets are asked (not compelled) to report adverse reactions if they suspect an adverse vaccine reaction. If a dog falls down having an epileptic fit within half an hour, ten days, or a month of vaccination, the vet very often fails to suspect a link - even though vaccines are known to cause epilepsy, and the human Vaccine Damage Compensation Unit has paid £millions to parents whose children were made epileptic by vaccines. Even if the vet does suspect a link, there is no law to make him report the suspected reaction. Many vets are too busy to complete the necessary paperwork, or seek to avoid being bothered by vaccine company representatives.
Myth No. 5.
"I am a vet, and I have only seen one vaccine reaction in 20 years' of practice."
Wrong: you only think you have seen one vaccine reaction in twenty years of practice! Veterinary education with regard to vaccines stops after 'do it'. Vets are ignorant of the vast spectrum of diseases that arise from vaccination.
Vets have been trained to look for an immediate reaction - where the dog is fatally allergic to the vaccine. In the event of a massive allergic reaction - anaphylactic shock - the vet is advised to inject adrenaline into the animal to save his life. Research papers published by eminent scientists show that the following diseases can be caused by vaccines. Is your vet looking for:
Autoimmune haemolytic anaemia
A dreadful disease that usually kills a dog within days. Progress of the disease closely resembles the last stages of AIDS. Scientists in America published a paper during 1997, saying that there is strong evidence to link this disease with ANY vaccine.
Cancer
Dr Denis W Macey was reported in an American veterinary paper as saying that up to 22,000 cats develop cancer at the site of vaccination every year in the USA. American cats are now being vaccinated in the tail or leg so that they can cut it off when it becomes cancerous.
According to New Scientist, published in 1996, "A monkey virus that contaminated millions of doses of polio vaccine has been directly implicated in triggering cancer. The virus, SV40, which scientists have found in several types of tumours, destroys a key defence mechanism by switching off a protein that protects cells against cancerous changes. In 1961, SV40 was discovered in the kidney cells of macaques (monkeys) used to culture the polio virus for vaccines." Translation: vaccines have been shown to cause inheritable cancer.
A leukaemia-like avian (bird) retrovirus has also been found at human cancer sites, suspected to have come from the MMR vaccine. Monkey kidneys, chick embryos, hamsters, ducks, dog brains and kidneys, and cat brains and kidneys are all commonly used as vaccine culture media. If the animal used as a culture medium for vaccines carries its own species-specific retrovirus and this is undetected and left in the vaccine, the vaccine can permanently alter the genes of the animal or human receiving the vaccine.
Genetic defects
Dr Larry Glickman at Purdue University has found that routinely vaccinated dogs develop auto-antibodies to a wide range of their own biochemicals, including DNA. The significance of this study is immense. It means that vaccines cause genetic defects.
Thyroid disease
can be caused by vaccines, and it then becomes an inheritable condition. Once a dog has underlying thyroid disease, he or she only needs a trigger - from a vaccine, an environmental pollutant, from stress, or from dietary inadequacies - to develop full-blown life-threatening autoimmune diseases.
Leukaemia
Dr Jean Dodds, one of the world's foremost experts in canine vaccine reactions, writes: "Recent vaccinations with single or combination modified live virus (MLV) vaccines are increasingly recognised contributors to immune-mediated blood diseases, bone marrow failure, and organ dysfunction." Dr Dodds lists leukaemia, thyroid disease, Addison's disease, diabetes, and lymphoma as diseases that can be triggered by vaccines.
Parvovirus
yes, parvovirus was created by vaccines. This disease didn't exist prior to the 1970s. In fact, scientists tell us it was created by vaccine manufacturers who cultured the distemper vaccine on cat kidneys that were infected with feline enteritis. This cat-enteritis-diseased distemper vaccine was then injected into dogs around the world, and parvovirus reared its ugly head around the world at the same time. A naturally occurring epidemic would spread slowly across continents. Parvovirus appeared with a big bang, in line with multi-national vaccine company distribution policies.
Similarly, human AIDS is thought by some scientists to be a vaccine-induced plague - coming, once again, from the infamous Salk polio vaccine that was developed on monkey tissue. HIV (humans), FIV (cats), and SIV (monkeys) are closely related viruses. Two separate scientific papers link the emergence of HIV in humans with the use of SIV-infected polio vaccines (cultured on monkey kidneys) on male homosexuals in New York, and innocent citizens of the Belgian Congo.
Arthritis
There are numerous scientific studies linking arthritis with vaccination. Vaccine components have even been isolated in the bones of arthritis sufferers post vaccination.
Allergies
There are many, many research papers showing a link between allergies and vaccines. Animals with a genetic predisposition to allergies ('people' from families with a history of irritable bowel syndrome/Crohns disease/enteritis, asthma, hay fever, eczema, attention deficit disorder, and so on), can become more allergic, or become highly sensitised, when you inject foreign proteins (serums and organ tissue contained in vaccines) into them. Ask around - you'll soon find people, and animals, who developed allergies they didn't used to have shortly after they were vaccinated. Flea bite allergy? That's vaccine damage.
Veterinary manuals talk openly about serum reactions, and vaccines contain serum. A serum reaction is nothing other than an allergic reaction to foreign blood products injected into the blood stream. It can be fatal. Just recently, the British government ordered the withdrawal of polio vaccines containing bovine serum due to the risk of BSE.
In 1983, Frick and Brooks published a paper to show that inhalant allergies (manifesting as atopic dermatitis) have developed in dogs when vaccinated with distemper, hepatitis and leptospirosis vaccines just prior to, but not after, exposure to pollen extracts. In other words, vaccines trigger genetic predispositions.
Homeopathic vets treat a large proportion of skin problems as 'vaccinosis' (a morbid reaction to vaccines). Homeopaths also treat the 'vaccine miasm'. This is the long-established homeopathic practice of recognising and treating inherited vaccine damage.
Epilepsy
As stated earlier, it is scientifically recognised that vaccines can cause epilepsy in humans. Dr Hans Selye published a famous paper in 'Nature' in 1936 which explained how an organism will react to a massive challenge (such as a vaccine). Every system of the body springs into action, and a hormone called DOC can be released. This hormone can cause brain lesions and destruction of large parts of the brain. Epilepsy is a neurological (brain) condition.
The Merck Manual states that encephalitis (brain inflammation) can be caused by vaccines. It also describes epilepsy as a symptom of encephalitis.
Myth No. 6.
Vaccine manufacturers have to undergo stringent procedures and tests to ensure safety.
Wrong: OK, partly true . . . vaccine manufacturers have to go through safety procedures and tests, but to claim that these tests are stringent is highly subjective. How, then, did SV40 get through; how did the avian virus get into the MMR vaccine; how did parvovirus slip through the net; and how did AIDS suddenly arrive from nowhere to kill off millions of human beings?
In actual fact, no-one is permitted (in the UK at least) to test the viral component of a veterinary vaccine - except a vaccine manufacturer. They are the only ones with a license to do it. This means that if you suspect a vaccine killed your puppy, you have to take the vaccine company's word for it if they say it didn't. There's no-one to go to if you want an independent check.
On top of this, did you know that government officials sign secrecy agreements with pharmaceutical companies before attending meetings? Our own elected representatives and civil servants are not protecting us, they are protecting the drug companies. The government bodies set up to protect us and our animals are infected from top to bottom with people whose income relies on the companies we are being allegedly 'protected' against. Drug licenses are granted by the very people who stand to make money from them. If you'd like to check this fact, please contact the Veterinary Medicines Directorate, a division of the Ministry of Agriculture, and ask to see the Register of Interests.
Myth No. 7.
It's better to risk a vaccine reaction than subject my dog to these deadly killer diseases.
Wrong: Firstly, very few of the classic canine diseases are deadly. Dogs are currently vaccinated against parvovirus, distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza and leptospirosis.
Parvovirus is only generally deadly to puppies and, as maternal antibody can be present for as many as 22 weeks, and as maternal antibody cancels out the vaccine, vaccinated puppies are unlikely to be protected from parvovirus. Adult dogs rarely die from parvovirus.
Distemper kills only half of affected dogs - and few vets have seen a case of distemper in the last ten years! Why are we still vaccinating our animals against this rare disease every year, especially as immunity against viral disease lasts for years or life? (Ref Dr Ronald D Schultz)
Clinical signs of hepatitis and parainfluenza range from mild and invisible to death - but the flu rarely kills and it mutates, so the vaccine is highly ineffective. Hepatitis can be caused by a range of factors, including poor diet, parasites, bacteria, fungus, chemicals and drugs, and the vaccine doesn't protect against all of the other dangers.
Leptospirosis is extremely rare. Apart from this, leptospirosis is a range of hundreds of bacterins; the chance of the strain in the needle matching the strain in the field is remote; and the vaccine only confers protection for between three and six months, leaving vaccinated dogs 'unprotected' for up to nine months anyway. Eminent scientists in both the UK and America have called for the withdrawal of this vaccine, because it is useless. This is precisely why every single dog with lepto in CHC's survey contracted it within three months of being vaccinated.
So think about it: you are risking cancer, leukaemia, arthritis, skin disease, allergies, autoimmune diseases, brain damage and death when you vaccinate. Are you going to do it anyway because a man in a white coat says you must? Write to a vaccine manufacturer and ask them to guarantee that their vaccine will protect your dog; ask them why you should vaccinate every year. We offer a prize to the first person who receives a direct, honest, or sensible answer. Ask the vaccine manufacturer to guarantee that your dog will not have an allergic reaction to the vaccine, or that vaccines cannot cause brain damage, arthritis, heart disease, autoimmune diseases and death. They will not do this, because they cannot. Also ask your vet to guarantee, in writing, that the vaccine he wishes to administer is safe, and that he will accept responsibility - both financial and moral - if any vaccine-associated conditions occur in your dog post-vaccination.
Canine Health Concern's vaccine survey indicated that at least three in every hundred dogs is damaged by vaccines. You may be lucky, or you may be like me: six of my six vaccinated dogs suffered vaccine-associated disease, including cancer, leukaemia, sudden paralysis and death, allergies, thyroid disease and arthritis.
Myth No. 8.
There is no reliable alternative to vaccination.
Wrong: Existing research and experience shows that the homeopathic nosode is as protective - but probably more protective - than vaccines. Nosodes are small pills that are given at intervals rather than injected-in.
A growing number of dog lovers are beginning to choose the homeopathic alternative to vaccines. Some have been using the nosode for up to twenty years, and claim that they have never had a problem. CHC has a growing number of members who refuse to vaccinate. They tell us that their dogs are robustly healthy; rarely need to see a vet; and are winning at the dog shows.
However, to be fair, you should understand that neither a vaccine nor the homeopathic nosode offers guaranteed protection against canine disease. A good diet is also key, and your dog's overall health is the best defence against any viral or bacterial challenge.
Myth No. 9.
You should vaccinate your dog every year.
Wrong: If you hear nothing else, if you can accept nothing else, please know that annual vaccination is not necessary. Please do not subject your dogs to the vaccine risk year after year until they drop.
Several American veterinary colleges have announced that annual vaccination is unnecessary, in reaction to consumer pressure and fears over adverse reactions. One veterinary college, at Colorado University, said that annual vaccination has no scientific basis, and we might as well have chosen 'every full moon' to stick the needle in. The AAVMA has circulated official guidelines saying that puppy shots are enough, and then vaccination is no longer necessary.
Please be aware, though, that a vaccine administered to a puppy, when his immune system is immature, is probably the most harmful jab of all, capable of wreaking havoc - havoc that you might not be able to detect immediately. I have two totally unvaccinated seven-year-old Golden Retrievers. They are the healthiest dogs I have ever shared my life with AND they have antibodies to distemper and parvovirus, indicating that they have met the disease in the field and remained unaffected. We haven't even had a day's sickness from them.
Myth No. 10.
My doctor/vet knows best.
Wrong: Doctors and vets are trained in a very specific healing discipline. They know about pharmaceuticals, and some of them know about surgery. But they rely upon the pharmaceutical industry to tell them which drugs to use in which circumstances. They also rely upon the pharmaceutical industry to provide discounts which are important to their financial viability - and these discounts are often negotiated on the basis of whose vaccine is being used.
Homeopaths do not claim to be able to reverse all vaccine damage, and conventional vets - not even recognising most forms of vaccine damage - have little success. Once you've administered the needle, you can never change your mind. Please STUDY THE FACTS, don't watch your dog die and live to regret it.
These facts are explored in more detail, with full references, in 'What Vets Don't Tell You About Vaccines'.
STEPS YOU MUST TAKE TO SAFEGUARD YOUR CHILDREN AND ANIMALS:
1. If you feel you must vaccinate, ensure that your child or animal is in good health.
2. Ask for and read the manufacturer's package insert and look for any side effects or contraindications
3. Familiarise yourself with vaccine side effects. Do not leave animals or children unattended after vaccination.
4. Monitor your child or animal for symptoms. Some adverse reactions occur within three days, but most reactions occur within three months of a shot. Serious immediate reactions include high fever, prolonged high-pitched screaming, breathing difficulty, shock, seizures, or lethargy. If you suspect a bad reaction, call your doctor or vet, or take your child or animal to see them straight away.
5. Tell your doctor or vet if your child or animal has had a previous reaction to any vaccine; a first reaction, even if it is mild, increases their chance of having another.
6. Alert your doctor if anyone in your family, or in the animal's family, has had vaccine reactions, convulsions or neurological disorders, severe allergies, or auto-immune diseases. Vaccination in these circumstances can prove fatal, and should not take place.
7. Keep your own permanent record of all vaccinations, including the vaccine manufacturer's name and batch number.
8. Investigate the homoeopathic vaccine alternative. Serious adverse reactions are not associated with the homoeopathic nosode, and there have been a number of trials showing their efficacy.

Vaccination

Myth No.
