Undescended Testicle
Occasionally is some dogs, a testicle (or sometimes both) remain undescended. This is called cryptorchidism.
This may lead to potential health issues later in life, such as a greater risk of a tumour, and therefore may need an operation to remove it.
Cryptorchid dogs should not be allowed to breed as it is a genetic trait, passed on to future generations. In addition, because of the potential for an increased incidence of torsion or cancer within the retained testicle, vets typically recommend that these individuals be neutered. The surgery to remove a retained testicle is more involved than a routine neuter. The vet must literally hunt for the testicle, which may be located anywhere from the area around the kidney in the abdomen to the muscle near the groin.
