There appears to be an increase in dog theft.
It is an awful position to be in and one that is heartbreaking for the owner, especially not knowing what has happened to their dog.
It goes without saying that your dog should not be left unattended where he might be taken.
Identification is not as simple as we might hope. If a dog who has been stolen has an ID, in any form, then it has to be checked by someone for it to be picked up. If a thief has your dog, he’s not going to do this.

Sometimes things happen in life no matter what you do.
The fact that dog theft does happen shouldn't mean you stop living, and the majority of people have never had a dog stolen.
So we just need to take sensible preventative action to keep our loved ones safe.
Animal communicator Pea Horsley had her lost dog Morgan returned by a passing stranger. She wrote:
"I am hugely grateful to this man who chose not to walk past Morgan but instead saw he was alone and decided to take him home where he'd be safe.
It also goes to show that tags are an essential part of reuniting missing animals with their guardians. Morgan is tagged and so all the man had to do was ring the number. When animals are only micro-chipped it takes longer to be reunited and sadly, I know from working with clients, not everyone takes a missing animal to the vet to be scanned for a chip."
