Jumping Up
Personally, I like it when my dogs jump up and place their beautiful paws on me – but I appreciate why I might be in the minority here.
Puppies need to be taught to sit when they meet exciting new people. They can’t sit and jump up at the same time.
If a dog does jump up, you can discourage him by turning your back. Dogs really don’t like it when you turn your back on them; it takes the reward out of the behaviour.
You can also put your hands gently on the dog’s chest and guide him to the floor whilst saying “off”.
When puppies and adult dogs are learning not to jump up at people, it would be a good idea to brief visitors before they enter the home. Don’t just give them permission to tell your dog to get down, positively encourage it, and teach them how.
