Eclampsia
(also known as Puerperal hypocacemia)
Eclampsia is extremely severe condition in female dogs which comes on suddenly within the first month after puppies are born. It is caused by abnormally low calcium levels, and can be fatal if not treated quickly. Signs include muscle tremors, restlessness, panting, incoordination, grand mal seizures, and high fever. It is a serious condition that could lead to death, so you need a vet – quick.

It stands to reason that mothers need a good balanced diet whilst growing, producing, and feeding their puppies. Some vets say that you shouldn’t feed a home prepared diet to a pregnant dog as you’ll get the balance wrong, but that you should buy a good quality processed food. Makes you wonder how dogs survived before the invention of pet food! Raw feeders are producing some beautiful pups.
