Coprophagia (eating poo)

Picture

It’s quite normal for a dog to eat faeces from herbivores such as horses, rabbits and sheep. They contain nutrients and valuable enzymes which aid digestion.

A dog eating its own poo can be a sign of dietary imbalance, boredom (left alone for a long time), or a behavioural issue.

If your dog's behaviour around poo seems abnormal, then it is wise to look at why this is happening.

Feeding a natural diet would normally modify unwanted poo-eating behaviour, although naturally-fed dogs will still eat faeces from herbivores if allowed.  And why not – they love going out for a snack!
