Gingivitis/Periodontal Disease

Gingivitis means inflammation of the gums. “Periodontal” means the tissues surrounding the tooth. Gum disease is common in dogs who are fed mushy food, typically from a can or a packet. Some gums and teeth are so badly infected that a course of antibiotic injections is required to reduce inflammation and infection before the mouth can be opened without pain.
Bones are Nature’s Toothbrush for carnivores, and if you feed your dog a diet consisting of mostly raw meaty bones, he’s less likely to get periodontal disease.

Put yourself in your dog’s paws. How would you like to live out of a can or a packet for your entire life and never clean your teeth? Have you ever noticed how your mouth feels when you forget to clean your teeth? It’s horrible, isn’t it.
When we feed processed pet food to our dogs, we are condemning them to life with millions of bacteria setting up a colony in their mouths. This bacteria not only affects the dog’s gums and teeth, but the dog also swallows it. This leads to damage to internal organs and depletes the immune system.
If your dog has bad breath, don’t make nasty comments about the dog – give yourself a good slap. And then GIVE YOUR DOG A BONE!
Unless, of course, you want to make your vet richer. Veterinary dentistry is one of the fastest growing money earners for vets, yet periodontal disease is entirely preventable.
