Fireworks
I don’t know many dogs who like fireworks, and some like them less than others. In fact, some are terrified of fireworks.
You can help your dog overcome his fear of fireworks with Emotional Freedom Technique. This energy therapy is a useful tool that will help you and your dogs in all sorts of situations and is well worth learning.
You can also purchase CDs which carry the sound of fireworks. The idea is that you start playing the CD on low volume and gradually increase the level so that the dog is eventually desensitised to the sound. If you introduce a very young puppy to the sound of fireworks, and other potentially frightening noises, he is more likely to be ‘bomb proof’ as an adult dog.
CBD Oil may also help reduce anxiety. It can take up to six weeks for the oil to take full effect in the system so make sure you start early enough!
If he will respond to doing something else, like playing, then rewarding him for playing and ignoring the fireworks can turn a bad situation into a good one.
Help to reduce the noise by closing curtains and keep the TV or radio on. Be careful at the time of year when you know fireworks are likely to be out there – don’t leave your dog in the garden if there’s a chance that there’ll be a sudden loud bang.
Very few people who have seen a frightened dog reacting to fireworks will rush out to buy them and let them off, although it can be quite a pull for people with young children. But surely it is not fair to be frightening animals in order to watch some pretty colours in the sky.
