If you have taken your dog as a puppy, or as a new dog, to kennels so that they’re used to them, then kennels can be a suitable option when you go away. It has to be said, though, that not all dogs find kennels a 'home from home', and not all kennels are a 'home from home'.
Home boarding is another option where your dog is boarded in the home boarder's own house.
These days there are other alternatives, such as home/pet sitting (in your own home).
If you do use a boarding kennels, make sure you visit beforehand and ensure you can see how the dogs are kept, and ask questions so that you are satisfied your dog will be looked after properly. If any doubts are raised, and not answered sufficiently, then walk away - not all kennels will look after your dog as you would wish.
A recommendation from a dog owing friend is a good start.

How do you want your dog to be looked after? Will kennel staff walk your dog every day, keep fresh water available, and feed what you feed? Will your dog’s emotional needs be addressed while you are away? Some dogs are OK in kennels, others are not. Does your dog have the temperament to take a stay in kennels in his stride, or will he pine for you while you’re away?
If your dog needs any medical treatment, or supplements, will the kennel administer them for you?
Will they accept your vaccination or homeopathic regime?
There are good kennels which are knowledgeable and able to cover everything you want for your dog. But if there isn't one in your area, then maybe it’s worth looking at other options.
